New Year, New Challenges

We are about a month into the new year.  Are you still excited about your goals?  We often see a new year as an opportunity for a new beginning, a chance to change our lives for the better.  So what happens?  Why does all that excitement fade and we just settle for doing what we have always done?

We get excited by our new goals and our new possibilities but until the actions we need to take to reach those goals become our habits, we can lose steam, become discouraged and give up.

Some may procrastinate.  Others may decide that the goal is not really worth the effort.  In any case, we feel “stuck” and often we fall into the trap of feeling that we are not good enough or smart enough to have the success we want.

What regular activities do you need to do to reach your goals?  Start with small, simple changes and repeat them often.  Find ways to reinforce your changes by rewarding yourself regularly. Celebrate success.  Focus on the positive and the path becomes easier.

Stress, Eating and the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us.  Starting with Halloween and running all the way through New Years, we have so many occasions to celebrate.  Fun, right?

For some people, this is the most stressful time of year.  They are supposed to be happy, but they are not!  They are supposed to enjoy the company of family, but they don’t!  They feel that they need to impress friends and family with gifts and the buying frenzy causes financial stress.  They go to parties where they over indulge in food and drink.  Expectations are high but the reality is often disappointing.

Before becoming completely overwhelmed and overtaken by the “spirit of the season”, I would advise an inward look and, of course, hypnosis is a wonderful tool for that purpose.   I recommend a three session program.  The program can be completely customized for the individual but usually includes the following:

Stress reduction

Sticking to a healthy eating plan

Releasing negative emotions around relationships with family

Is it Magic?

I always tell my clients that hypnosis is not a magic wand. I can’t “fix” someone who is 50 pounds overweight even though I can make the process of losing that weight easier.  In the case of weight management, hypnosis focuses on the thinking about food; reducing cravings and eating for health.

I recently read somewhere that hypnosis can be a magic wand in the sense that the changes in the subconscious mind begin to happen quickly. However, the analogy I like best is that hypnosis and the process of hypnotherapy is more like a snow ball rolling down hill and picking up more snow as it goes. Hypnotherapy is a cumulative process which becomes more and more effective with multiple sessions and frequent listening to the recordings that I make during a session.
